How time zone conversion works
Every time zone is defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). New York is UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT); London is UTC+0 (GMT) in winter and UTC+1 (BST) in summer; India is always UTC+5:30. To convert, first turn the source time into UTC, then apply the target offset. The tricky part is daylight saving time, which starts and ends on different dates in North America, Europe and the Southern Hemisphere – this converter uses your browser's built-in time zone database, so those rules are applied automatically.
Common conversions
- EST to PST: Pacific time is 3 hours behind Eastern time (12:00 PM ET = 9:00 AM PT).
- ET to UK time: London is usually 5 hours ahead of New York (4 hours for a few weeks in March and late October/early November when DST dates differ).
- GMT to IST: India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT, or 4:30 ahead of BST in summer.
- AEST to UTC: Sydney is 10 hours ahead of UTC in winter (AEST) and 11 hours in summer (AEDT).

What is the difference between EST and EDT?
EST (Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5) is used in winter; EDT (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC−4) is used during daylight saving time from mid-March to early November. “ET” covers both.
Is GMT the same as UTC?
For everyday purposes, yes – both have zero offset. UTC is the precise scientific standard; GMT is also the name of the UK's winter time zone.
