How to convert military time to standard time

  • 0000 to 0059: replace 00 with 12 and add AM (0045 = 12:45 AM).
  • 0100 to 1159: remove the leading zero, add a colon and AM (0830 = 8:30 AM).
  • 1200 to 1259: keep the number, add a colon and PM (1215 = 12:15 PM).
  • 1300 to 2359: subtract 1200, add a colon and PM (1745 − 1200 = 545 → 5:45 PM).

How to convert standard time to military time

  • AM times: write the hour with two digits and remove the colon (7:15 AM = 0715). Midnight hour: 12:30 AM = 0030.
  • PM times: add 12 to the hour (3:20 PM → 15:20 → 1520). Noon hour stays the same: 12:40 PM = 1240.

How to say military time

Military time is spoken as two pairs of digits. Whole hours use “hundred”: 0600 is “zero six hundred” and 1900 is “nineteen hundred”, often followed by “hours”. Other times are read as numbers: 1430 is “fourteen thirty”, 0915 is “zero nine fifteen”. Midnight can be written 0000 (start of the day) or 2400 (end of the day).

Military time is used by armed forces, hospitals, emergency services, aviation and most countries outside North America. If you also need to switch time zones, use the time zone converter; aviation “Zulu” time is UTC.
